Why do Malaysians like putting eggshells on the tips of their mother-in-law-tongues (lidah jin)?

I am so perplexed at this too! Someone told me it just looks decorative? As if the lidah jin plant is too plain, and they have to use the word "bunga telur" literally... :D

I think I've seen some painted ones before too, or maybe remnants of some Chinese birthday celebration (in the magenta dye).

The sight of them makes me want to eat eggs though.

Oh, I didn't know it's called bunga telur as well.
